The Quiet Revolution of New Finance
Lately, I've been intrigued by something in my social media and news feeds: stablecoins. But it's not just about stablecoins; it's about the infrastructure transformation they're driving.
Lately, I’ve been intrigued by something in my social media and news feeds: stablecoins. But it’s not just about stablecoins; it’s about the infrastructure transformation they’re driving.
Back in January and April 2025, I had some fascinating conversations with Erbil Karaman, one of the founders of Huma Finance, about blockchain-backed new financial infrastructures. And recently, reading news about payment system infrastructure providers working on their own blockchains and stablecoins, or seeing Elbruz Yılmaz’s detailed posts about the concept of “new finance,” has only fueled my excitement.
Yes, stablecoins… For years, they’ve been seen as the “safe harbor of crypto.” When markets got choppy, investors flocked to them, or wished they had. (And sure, some might say “wish we hadn’t,” but that’s another story 🙂)
But stablecoins are no longer just the stability factor in the crypto world, they’re becoming the new foundation of global financial infrastructure. This transformation is happening quietly, but it’s profound. Just like in Turner’s painting, The Fighting Temeraire:
By J.M.W. Turner - National Gallery of Art “While the sailboats wait for the wind, a small steam-powered ship ushers in a new era.” Today, stablecoins are doing the same thing, like the silent engines of finance, they’re pulling the system into the next era.
In recent weeks, this quiet transformation has become a hot topic of debate among many voices. It’s not just about crypto anymore; it’s about who controls the flow of money, not just who prints it.
💬 Who Writes the Rules, Who Manages the Flow?
Europe has chosen to be the “rule setter” with its MiCA regulations. They’ve worked on this for a long time and have achieved the most tangible results in regulation. But setting rules doesn’t always mean holding power.
As Elbruz Yılmaz highlighted in one of his posts:
“MiCA fixes the rulebook, but it doesn’t fix the economics.”
So while Europe writes the rules, the U.S. manages the flow. Tether, Circle, and the newly announced USAT are further strengthening the dollar’s dominance on the blockchain. This isn’t just a tech race; it’s a re-architecture of the global monetary system.
Citigroup’s 2024 report backs this up:
“Stablecoins are no longer just crypto rails; they’re becoming the foundation of cross-border settlements.”
Today, stablecoin issuers are among the largest buyers of U.S. Treasury bonds. This means the dollar is now circulating not through central banks, but in the language of smart contracts. It shows a shift in financial power from “rule-setting” authorities to “flow-managing” structures.
🇹🇷 The Turkish Perspective: Innovation Born of Necessity Turkey stands out as a country using stablecoins not as an “investment,” but as a means of access. Limited foreign exchange access, high inflation, capital controls, and a young population seeking global income, all these make stablecoins not just a trend but an economic necessity.
One of the data points shared by Elbruz Yılmaz:
“On global exchanges, TRY pairs consistently rank in the top 5 fiat pairs, despite Türkiye’s GDP being less than 5% of the EU’s total.”
This difference actually proves that Turkey is naturally adapting to blockchain-based financial structures. Today, the country has become a laboratory for new financial systems, from digital TL tests to private sector projects.
Digital assets and stablecoins are becoming an alternative layer to bank accounts, international transfers, and even savings tools. Emerging economies, just like they skipped landlines and went straight to mobile phones, are now skipping traditional banking and moving to the stablecoin economy.
⚙️ Quiet Engines, Big Change Stablecoins are no longer just digital dollars; they’re the API layer, the infrastructure of the financial system. A new language of infrastructure is forming, from cross-border payments to B2B settlements.
“What started as wrapped dollars is becoming something else entirely: a programmable foundation for the next era of payments.”
At the heart of this transformation are not just Tether or Circle. New generation infrastructure players, projects like Huma Finance and Arf, or major payment infrastructure firms, will soon showcase the intersection of this story with the real economy.
🔁 Next Step The story of stablecoins doesn’t end here. Next week, we’ll look at the second layer of this quiet revolution, the bridges blockchain is building to the real economy, income, credit, and production models.
